Lawnmowers in 1914

1914 to 2014
There have been so many changes in the last 100 years and hopefully most will have been improvements. Many gardening tasks remain the same, for example mowing lawns, however the tools that we use are very different. Suttons sold lawnmowers in 1914 and are still selling them today. Looking at the pictures below I think I’ll leave it up to you to decide if there has been an improvement. Personally, I’m not so sure.

What we offer now:

Modern Lawnmower

What we offered then:

Classic lawnmower, Horse not included!

We still get some fantastic product reviews, here is an example for this mower from 1914…
“I have given The Sutton Lawn Mower a season’s work and could not wish for a better machine. It is not only efficient but is the lightest machine I ever handled. My employer is very pleased with it.” – Mr E Pople, Gardener to G.A.R Fitzgerald, Esq, K.C
NOTE: We only supplied the mower, not the pony!

About Lis

Our Suttons Blog comes from Lis Wallace, Head of Customer Service here at Suttons since 2002. Living on the edge of Dartmoor Lis has a large and “somewhat tricky” garden split across several levels but with the bonus of a stream tumbling through and a large, fertile veg patch.

Across the blog Lis will share some of the knowledge she has gained over the years from her father, from working at Suttons and also from her own trial and error. Storm the Jack Russell is bound to chip in now and then. That’s what terriers do!
