Chamomile Sleep Soother

Chamomile Seeds Sleep Soother

To make a calming chamomile tea

Create a calming green swathe of chamomile lawn and then gather the white flowers to make a bath milk that will soften and soothe dry and irritated skin or a tea to calm busy minds.

Chamomile infusions with the scent of apples have long been reputed to bring calm and sleep and there’s a reason that the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and later civilisations all believed it to also be invaluable for promoting enriched and healthy skin. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties have long been recognised for enriching dry, itchy skins

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp fresh chamomile flowers
  • 1 sprig of fresh mint (optional)
  • 8 oz boiling water

Method
The leaves can be used dried or fresh but this recipe uses them fresh.  Simply place the flowers (and the optional spring of mint) in a teapot and pour over the boiling water

Leave to infuse for 5 minutes, strain into a mug, add honey to taste and enjoy.

To make a sleep soother bath milk

Ingredients

  • 30gm dried chamomile flowers (or 60gm fresh)
  • 500ml sunflower oil
  • 20 drops lavender essential oil
  • 100ml coconut cream (from the top of a can of coconut milk or use a block of coconut cream and follow instructions to make it into a liquid)

Method
What’s great about this bath milk is that its so cheap to make that you don’t need to use it sparingly. Its also light and non-greasy so you really can slosh it in to make a truly luxurious, skin-soothing soak.

Combine the chamomile flowers and sunflower oil in a heat-proof bowl. Place the bowl above a pan of gently simmering water, cover it, and leave for about an hour (take care that the pan doesn’t boil dry).
Remove from the heat and when cool, strain the oil and stir in the lavender oil. This chamomile/lavender oil is a superb, soothing skin massage oil that will keep in a sealed jar for up to a year.

To turn the oil into a milk that will mix into your bath water, whisk the oil, 1 tablespoon at a time into the coconut cream, thoroughly combining the ingredients each time to produce a rich ‘double cream’ like consistency.

How to use
Use 100-200ml to make your bath-time experience a luxurious one and bottle and store the rest for up to a month in the refrigerator.
