10 tips for growing giant pumpkins

To grow the biggest possible pumpkin, here’s some advice from our horticultural team:

  1. If you’re starting the seeds in April, sow them in small pots and keep them indoors. Bury the seeds on their edge, about 1cm deep.
  2. If you prefer to direct sow your seeds outdoors, wait until late May or early June. Pop them into 2.5cm deep holes, and cover with a cloche.
  3. Why not try both methods, to see which works best?
  4. Once they germinate, choose the strongest seedlings to grow on.
  5. Harden off indoor-raised seedlings for 7–10 days before planting outside.
  6. Plant them in a sunny spot
  7. Give your pumpkins plenty of space – for ‘Atlantic Giants’, we recommend up to 2m between each plant.
  8. To get the best results, limit each plant to just one fruit and feed it regularly with a high-potassium fertiliser.
  9. Water your plants consistently, using a sunk plant pot to avoid overwatering the base.
  10. To prevent the fruits from rotting, keep them off damp soil using tiles, bricks, or straw.
