I’m normally pleased to see flowers in the garden but was very disappointed to see some on my onions this weekend! A couple of them have developed flowers at the tip (see picture) – strangely it only seems to be the Red Onions and not the white.
One of the advantages of working at Suttons is that we have experts to ask and I’ve since found out that this is normally caused by cold winters and is often associated with onion sets that have not been heat treated (I did buy cheap ones at the garden centre rather than get them from Suttons!)
Apparently the onions are okay to use but will not keep for very long. So it’s not a complete disaster.
