Rob Smith’s top 5 grafted vegetable plants

Grafted aubergine ‘meatball’ from Suttons

Grafted vegetable plants are a clever way to grow your own bumper harvests of delicious veg. Each grafted plant produces up to 75% more than its regular counterpart, but they deliver far more than quantity. The fruiting half is also chosen for its exceptional flavour. Here, Suttons Product Development Manager, Rob Smith shares five of his favourite grafted vegetable plants…

1. Grafted Cucumber ‘Mini Stars’

Grafted Cucumber ‘Mini-Stars’ produces a prolific number of juicy fruits from July right through to October. Crisp and refreshing, the mini-cucumbers are perfect for slicing into sandwiches and salads, or popping whole into lunchboxes and snack pots.

With exceptional resistance to powdery mildew, this strong, vigorous and low-maintenance plant can be grown in pots, raised beds, veg patches or greenhouses. Pick the mini fruits every other day to keep the plant producing all season.

2. Grafted Tomato ‘Aviditas’

As a keen tomato-grower myself, I particularly like Grafted Tomato ‘Aviditas’ which yields masses of delicious, bite-sized plum tomatoes. Sweet enough for salads and firm enough for oven-roasting, these flavour-packed fruits can be picked loose or harvested as a whole truss.

The grafted rootstock of Tomato ‘Aviditas’ enhances the plant’s vigour and productivity, resulting in crops as early as July. But it’s the winning combination of flavour and performance that make this grafted tomato plant a standout choice for me.

3. Grafted Aubergine ‘Scorpio’

Experience super-early cropping with Grafted Aubergine ‘Scorpio’. Thanks to their turbo-grafted rootstock, these plants start producing fruit up to two months earlier than regular aubergine plants.

Perfect for patio container growing, find a sheltered spot in full sun to get the most from these grafted aubergines. In a good year, each plant can yield over fifteen glossy, deep-purple aubergines.

4. Grafted Sweet Pepper ‘Thor’

Grafted Sweet Pepper ‘Thor’ produces impressively long, sweet peppers that measure up to 25cm each. These Italian-style fruits are not only eye-catching, but also exceptionally tasty. Enjoy them sliced with dips, tossed into salads, baked in the oven or, one of my favourites, grilled to perfection on a summer barbecue!

The grafted rootstock ensures robust plant health, making them suitable for outdoor growing if you don’t have a greenhouse. Strong and resilient, these luscious red peppers are far less likely to suffer from late blight or soil-borne diseases.

5. Grafted Chilli Pepper ‘Medina’

For those, like me, who love a bit of heat, Grafted Chilli Pepper ‘Medina’ is a must-grow. The small, upright plants are quickly smothered in long, bright-red chillies, each with a Scoville rating of 30,000 for a satisfying medium-hot level of spice.

Ideal for growing in a greenhouse, sunny patio or even on your kitchen windowsill, grafted chilli plants give you a strong headstart on the growing season and allow plenty of time for the fruits to develop their full flavour and heat. Harvest them as required to eat fresh, or dry the fruits and make your own chilli powder.
