How to grow potatoes without a garden

Potatoes might not be the obvious choice for a small space veg garden, but they’re a surprisingly good candidate for container growing. A sunny patio, balcony or courtyard is all you need for a few bags or pots. What’s more, potatoes are one of the easiest crops to grow, rewarding you with lots of delicious food for very little effort…
Step-by-step guide to using Suttons patio potato kit
- Start chitting: Pop your seed potatoes into an empty egg carton on a bright windowsill. As soon as they’re exposed to light they’ll start to sprout.
- Prep your bags: The durable grow bags in our kit are specifically designed for potatoes. Set them up in a light position where the plants’ foliage will get plenty of sun.
- Add the compost: Fill each 8 litre grow bag almost to the top with incrediPeatFree compost or multi-purpose variety.
- Drop in a chitted potato: Plunge a single sprouted seed potato into each bag, at a depth of 12cm, with the strongest ‘eyes’ facing up.
- Water: Keep the compost moist but not saturated. Inconsistent watering affects the quality of your harvest, so check regularly.
- Harvest: Your potatoes are ready to harvest when the plants have finished flowering, the foliage has died down, and the leaves have turned yellow. ‘Maris Piper’ potatoes are versatile all-rounders that make particularly good chips!
