Hydrangeas are popular, flowering shrubs renowned for their ability to change colour in different soils. Whether you choose a macrophylla, paniculata, arborescens, serrata, or even a climbing variety, there’s a hydrangea to suit every garden. Here are six reasons to plant a hydrangea:

  1. Hydrangeas are easy to grow, low-maintenance plants that rarely suffer from pests or diseases.
  2. These show-stopping shrubs can be planted alone, or as part of a mixed scheme. They flower in a wide range of colours including white, pink, blue and purple, and some varieties even change colour as they age.
  3. Many hydrangeas continue to bloom all summer and long into October. Mopheads can keep their dried flower heads through winter for added structural interest.
  4. There’s a hydrangea for every position, including small patios and shady corners.
  5. Provided they’re kept moist, hydrangeas thrive in a range of soils. Macrophyllas turn blue in acid soil and pink in alkaline soil.
  6. Hydrangeas make excellent fresh cut flowers. You can also dry the long stems for an elegant, long-lasting display.
